In this episode of scigest, host and scientist Tom Moore sits down with Principal Scientist Dr Linley Jesson to explore her fascinating career journey from ornithology and plant biology to genomics and data science. Linley shares how influential mentors helped shape her path, the curiosity that led her from studying bird behaviour to the intricacies of plant reproduction, and how her research has evolved alongside the rapid growth of genomic technologies.\n \nThe conversation delves into her work on plant reproductive biology, moss genomics and the increasingly vital role of data science in unlocking new scientific insights. Linley also reflects on the importance of mentoring the next generation of researchers, embracing change throughout a scientific career, and finding opportunities to innovate in an evolving research landscape.\n \nWhether you're curious about the future of data-driven science or the winding career paths that lead to groundbreaking research, this episode offers insight into the people behind the data.\n\nTo view our full catalogue of podcasts including extra links on some podcasts please go to our Scigest pages: www.plantandfood.com/scigest\n","title":"Linley Jesson: Dissecting the data"},"cardImage":{"sys":{"id":"6oisztngWT8dnhewHWpSuP","publishedVersion":5},"url":"https://images.ctfassets.net/y9no91j9bwnp/6oisztngWT8dnhewHWpSuP/4e045b51a5debb2bb2fd7c8ea765ec54/podcast-2026-linley-jesson-disecting.jpg","title":"Linley Jesson: Dissecting the data","height":1407,"width":2500,"contentType":"image/jpeg"},"shareImage":{"url":"https://images.ctfassets.net/y9no91j9bwnp/6oisztngWT8dnhewHWpSuP/4e045b51a5debb2bb2fd7c8ea765ec54/podcast-2026-linley-jesson-disecting.jpg"},"publishDate":"2026-07-07T00:00:00.000+01:00","content":null,"contactBlock":{"__typename":"Contentful_BlockGetInTouch","sys":{"id":"3vtnDWOEZfTHV2fURsAIO1","publishedVersion":39},"heading":"Get in touch","subHeading":"Interested?","colourway":{"label":"Purple"},"callToAction":{"__typename":"Contentful_Link","sys":{"id":"6duaiOQrpF2reo5g7x0uRd","publishedVersion":7},"label":"Contact Us","externalUrl":null,"internalPageQueryString":null,"openInNewTab":null,"internalPage":{"__typename":"Contentful_Page","urlSlug":"contact-us"},"variant":"Primary","buttonSize":"large","file":null},"image":{"__typename":"Contentful_ImageWithFocalPoint","sys":{"id":"57Egf2RaZ9AoZ0DHpZMbAz","publishedVersion":3},"focalPoint":{"focalPoint":{"x":1201,"y":388}},"image":{"sys":{"id":"2auskQdAfK9HTQwqy8X1eW","publishedVersion":4},"url":"https://images.ctfassets.net/y9no91j9bwnp/2auskQdAfK9HTQwqy8X1eW/1f04e3f46bb9358358ac9173464795d0/image3.png","title":"Get in Touch","height":792,"width":1440,"contentType":"image/png"}}},"creditsCollection":{"items":[{"title":"Dr","firstName":"Linley","lastName":"Jesson","urlSlug":"linley-jesson","bio":"I'm a data scientist with a background in evolutionary and statistical genetics, with research interests in Genomic Prediction. I am particularly interested in the areas of nitrogen pollution, entomology, and invasive species, where I use data spanning across time and space. One of my ongoing research projects involves investigating the impact of biocontrol methods on managing Queensland fruit fly populations in Australia, which can be used as a case study to introduce causal inference to ecologists.\n\nOne of my core interests is mentoring others, and to this aim I organise a statistical drop-in session called RgonJaRgon, providing support and guidance to aspiring scientists in their statistical endeavours.","photo":{"sys":{"id":"32CJTGCQI0OdpwVB7dlJ9f","publishedVersion":7},"url":"https://images.ctfassets.net/y9no91j9bwnp/32CJTGCQI0OdpwVB7dlJ9f/91fb66ac202c537fc8e398c0841b06ab/profile-photo-tom-moore.jpg","title":"Tom Moore","height":3000,"width":3000,"contentType":"image/jpeg"}}]},"marketingTeamCredit":false,"researchAreasCollection":{"items":[]},"sectorsCollection":{"items":[]}}}},"pageContext":{"id":"4odct3pRlgAIgbqfpm9YgX","preview":false,"language":"en-au","intl":{"language":"en-au","languages":["en-nz","en-au","pt-br"],"messages":{"usefulLinksHeading":"Useful Links","footerNewsletterSubscribeHeading":"Subscribe to our newsletter","footerNewsletterSubscribeSuccess":"Thanks for subscribing!","formValidation.unexpectedError":"An unexpected error has occurred.
