Dr Bjorn Oback

Science Team Leader

I earned my PhD in Biology at the Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Centre, University of Heidelberg, and Max-Planck Institute for Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics, Dresden, Germany. Since then, I have been working on targeted improvement of farmed animals to benefit food production, biomedicine, and the environment. Within these broad impact areas, my research aims to genetically enhance animal genotypes by developing novel genetic and reproductive technologies, building national capability in agri-biotech. In 2024, I switched from agriculture to aquaculture and moved to Plant & Food Research, where I lead the Aquatic Phenomics and Genomics Team. I am an Associate Investigator at the Maurice Wilkins Centre and hold Adjunct and Associate Professor positions at Waikato University and the University of Auckland, respectively.
