We study how food reacts with the body and identify the compounds in foods that deliver extra benefits.

You are what you eat. More than ever, consumers want to know what’s in their food and want to know how different foods can influence their health and wellbeing.

We study how the human body reacts to food and the long-term effects on health. Our research is identifying the healthy compounds in fruits, vegetables, grains and seafood, and building knowledge of how different foods and food components interact with the human body. We use a range of different techniques to work out how food affects the human body, including clinical studies to look at how different foods and food components interact with and change fundamental biological processes.

We’re using our knowledge to feed back to our plant breeding programmes, so we can develop new plant-based foods and ingredients that are full of the good with less of the not-so-good. Positive foods which are good for people and good for the planet.
