New Cultivar Innovation

Dr Dinum Herath

Scientist

My journey in agricultural research commenced in Sri Lanka. In 2009, I proudly earned my Bachelor's in Agriculture from Rajarata University, then a Master of Philosophy degree in Agricultural Biology at the University of Peradeniya (Sri Lanka), completing the programme in 2016. Driven by a passion for understanding plant genetics, I made a significant move to New Zealand to pursue a PhD. My research focused on unravelling the functional roles of members within the PEBP gene family, specifically emphasising their impact on flowering and dormancy in kiwifruit. Under the guidance of Prof. Joanna Putterill (University of Auckland) and Dr. Erika Varkonyi-Gasic (Plant & Food Research), my commitment to excellence led to the successful completion of my doctoral degree in 2022. The recognition of a place on the Dean's List was truly humbling. Currently, I hold the position of Research Scientist at Plant & Food Research. I'm proud to be a part of the Genetics of Actinidia Productivity team, contributing to advancements in our understanding of the genetic factors influencing kiwifruit flower and fruit development.
