Seafood Technologies
Dr Matthew Wylie
Senior Scientist
I am multidisciplinary biologist and Senior Scientist with Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Māmoe and Waitaha whakapapa (ancestry). I have a background in Zoology and Ecology and work at the nexus of Indigenous-led fisheries research, fish reproduction, aquaculture, and novel conservation technologies such as cryobanking. My current research focuses on four key areas: 1. Experimental approaches (physiology, histology and molecular biology) to enhance captive breeding and broodstock management of fishes; 2. Identification and evaluation of new species for aquaculture; 3. Cryopreservation and surrogacy technologies to aid fish conservation; 4. Ethical considerations and tikanga (protocol) associated with studying culturally significant (taonga) species, including the collection, use and storage of samples. Across these areas, I draw from close partnerships with Māori communities and knowledge-holders, and international collaborations, as well as from my own experience in governance and advisory roles working with taonga species and the environment. Overall, my work aims to build Indigenous capacity in research, environmental protection, fisheries science and management, and to enhance economic and conservation outcomes of taonga species.
