New Cultivar Innovation
Dr Philippa Barrell
Science Team Leader
I’m a scientist working in the field of genetics and plant breeding, with a particular interest in grapevines. My academic journey began with a BSc in biochemistry and microbiology from Otago, followed by an MSc (Hons) in cell biology from Auckland and a PhD in biotechnology from Lincoln. After completing my PhD, I worked as a postdoc at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, where I delved into the genetics of meiosis using maize as a model system. I developed techniques for studying meiosis in 3D using confocal microscopy. Over the years, my career has involved studying the genetics of various plant species, including the New Zealand native tree puriri; potato; and the model plants tobacco and California poppy. Currently, my research is focused on grape genetics and breeding, with a particular emphasis on table grapes, but also wine grapes and rootstocks. My research aims to better understand the genetic makeup of these plants and improve their traits through breeding, to support New Zealand industries.
