Dr Robin MacDiarmid

Co-Science Group Leader (tangata tiriti), Plant Pathogen Environment

My scientific interests are to understand and manage those plant pathogens that are risks to New Zealand's primary sector and to realise the potential of beneficial viruses such as viruses of fungi. My research focuses on discovery of novel viruses and identifying their biological impact within ecosystems. I also oversee the integration of a large multidisciplinary project and ensure that the science team is high performing and productive academically. I am also an Associate Professor at the University of Auckland. I have mentored 33 students to complete 43 post-graduate degrees (including 10 PhD) and three post-doctoral scientists to develop their careers in plant pathology. At both Plant & Food Research and the University of Auckland I support the development of Māori and Pasifika students’ and scientists’ interactions with their communities and businesses. Five of 17 MSc students have been Māori or Pasifika and I have helped create a bridge between study and employment for Māori or Pasifika researchers.
